What is Ulcerative Colitis?
Ulcerative colitis is a chronic disease that affects the large intestine, commonly known as the colon. This condition is characterized by inflammation and sores, or ulcers, in the lining of the colon. Symptoms can vary from mild to severe and may include abdominal pain, frequent bowel movements, and bloody stool.
It is important to note that ulcerative colitis is a long-term condition that usually requires lifelong care and management. The good news is, with the right treatment plan—which can include medication via infusion therapy, lifestyle changes, and in some cases, surgery—many people with ulcerative colitis can manage their symptoms and lead full, active lives without limits.
Ulcerative Colitis Symptoms
At GI Care, we understand that each of our patients is unique and is going to experience their condition in a unique way. So, symptoms of ulcerative colitis may vary from patient to patient. That being said, some common ulcerative colitis symptoms we see in our patients include the following:
- Abdominal pain
- Chronic fatigue
- Cramping
- Diarrhea
- Fever
- Rectal pain and bleeding
- Sudden weight loss
- Urgency to defecate
It is important to note that the list above is not comprehensive, meaning there is a long list of additional symptoms our patients may face that we have not mentioned above. If you are struggling with two or more of these symptoms in addition to other discomfort, we encourage you to come in and see our dedicated nursing team or effective and compassionate ulcerative colitis treatment.
Ulcerative Colitis Treatment
Treatment for ulcerative colitis aims to manage symptoms long term, as there is no cure for the condition. Our ultimate goal is to ensure patients like you live happily and comfortably for years to come.
Infusion therapy is a critical component of this treatment. Infusion for ulcerative colitis may include the medications, Stelara, Entyvio, and Infliximab, also known as Remicade. These medications work to reduce inflammation within the colon, providing relief to those suffering from severe ulcerative colitis symptoms.
During your infusion therapy, you can enjoy the book you’ve always wanted to read, watch a movie you’ve had your eye on, or even enjoy a snack and take a nap. We want this process to be as relaxing for you as possible, so we provide you with the comfort you desire, including free Wi-Fi. The number of infusions you require will depend on your preferred medication and the severity of your condition.
Ulcerative Colitis FAQs
Similar to Crohn’s disease, the exact cause of ulcerative colitis remains unknown. Scientists and researchers have found that the condition may be caused by an immune response to bacteria within the gut or virus within the body. While some may think that ulcerative colitis is a hereditary condition, many who suffer from ulcerative colitis do not have a family history of the condition.
Your provider may use a combination of diagnostic tests to accurately diagnose you with ulcerative colitis. These diagnostic tests include but are not limited to blood tests, stool samples, colonoscopy, CT scan, and X-ray imaging. Once you have received your diagnosis for your condition, your doctor can work with our dedicated team to provide you with infusion therapies that best suit your individual needs.
Although the condition can affect anyone at any time, there are triggers that may cause ulcerative colitis flare ups. It is generally recommended that patients avoid the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs), like Motrin® and Advil® when possible. It is also recommended to talk to your doctor about avoiding antibiotics, as these medications may cause a flare up as well. In addition, we always recommend our patients do what they can to avoid emotional distress. In addition to being good for their mental health, avoiding emotional stress and getting regular exercise can make all the difference in ulcerative colitis treatment.
